Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments Awards $2,000 Grant to Support Monroe City’s “Ole’ Fashioned Downtown Christmas”

Date: November 25, 2024

Monroe City, MO – The Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments (MTRCOG) is proud to announce the awarding of a $2,000 grant to the Monroe City Area Chamber of Commerce for their upcoming holiday initiative, the “Ole’ Fashioned Downtown Christmas.” This grant underscores MTRCOG’s commitment to fostering community engagement in northeast Missouri.

The “Ole’ Fashioned Downtown Christmas” campaign will begin on November 30, 2024, and aims to celebrate the holiday season by showcasing Monroe City’s local businesses, creating a vibrant downtown atmosphere, and attracting visitors to the area.

Key features of the initiative include:

  • Shop Local Campaign: Local shops will extend their hours and collaborate with vendors to create a festive shopping experience throughout the holiday season.
  • Family-Friendly Events: Activities such as Sip & Paint nights, breakfasts with Santa, and photos with Santa at the new Summer Street Groom Room will bring the community together.
  • Entertainment: Carolers and live performances will provide weekend entertainment in downtown shops, adding to the festive atmosphere.
  • Annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting: On December 7, the city will host its beloved parade and light the downtown Christmas tree.
  • Special Festivities on December 14: Celebrations will coincide with both Downtown Monroe City events and the town’s 100th Basketball Tournament, further enhancing community pride and participation.
  • Business Passport Program: Shoppers who visit at least six participating businesses will be entered into a raffle, encouraging support for local merchants.

“We are honored to support Monroe City’s efforts to create an engaging and impactful holiday season,” said Anna Gill, Community Planner. “The ‘Ole’ Fashioned Downtown Christmas’ is an exemplary project that fosters economic vitality while celebrating the community’s unique character and traditions.”

This initiative is expected to bring increased foot traffic to downtown businesses, attract tourism, and highlight the many landmarks and resources that make Monroe City a cherished destination.
